Many of us have been doing Object Oriented Programming (OOP) since their first "hello World" program or just forgot the concepts behind functional programming.

The goal of this meetup is to help you get started with functional programming or refresh your memory without going over elementary details.

* Functional programming is when functions, not objects or procedures, are the fundamental building blocks of a program

November 2011 KCSEM Event
Having trouble understanding what you might need to do to gain visibility in the search engines? KCSEM will be reviewing websites in quick collaborative sessions to provide insight on what you might want to consider as next steps in getting your site a presence for desired terms. We ask that site URLs be submitted to KCSEM in advance of the site clinic to help us preview the sites to be reviewed. Don’t have a site? Or don’t want yours’ reviewed? That’s fine! Come anyway, and learn key aspects that may help your site to perform well in search engine results and network with a bunch of nice, smart folks. DemandCon is KCSEM’s November event sponsor. Co-founder Shawn Elledge will be on hand to discuss the next DemandCon conference and why you should be there.

Microsoft virtualization technologies provide you a solid foundation for delivering IT as a Service to take your business to the private cloud. Our Private Cloud solution is not just about virtualization. We offer strong management capabilities, using which you can holistically manage all of your services and applications, which is where you’re true business value lies, not in VMs or physical servers. Using our solution, you can get deep application insights and therefore deliver business SLAs with confidence. Microsoft offers virtualization that spans from desktop to data center to the cloud. We offer a comprehensive and customer-centric solution with more choice, flexibility, and cost savings than VMware.

In the morning session we will take a look at the Microsoft virtualization technologies including Hyper-V, SCVMM 2012, SCOM 2012 and all the products to take your DC to the next level. Hyper-V offers best-in-class performance for Microsoft workloads (SharePoint, SQL Server, and Exchange) and you can rely on Hyper-V to virtualize Tier-1 data center applications with confidence. System Center 2012 provides a common management offering full visibility and control for your IT pros across your hybrid environments. At the same time, we continue to empower your application owners with self-service to make sure they can deliver agile app experiences to their businesses. System Center 2012 technologies, you can take advantage of existing datacenter investments with 3rd party integration and provides your infrastructure cross platform management and automation from the metal up. We know that you have made existing investments in your datacenter, and we can integrate and extend upon existing systems.

In the afternoon session you will be allowed to explore the technologies on your terms:

· Do you want to install some of the technologies and take it for a test drive like?
o Windows Server 2008 R2
o Configure Hyper-V for best Practices
o Configure a test environment (networking , a DC VM, a VM for SCVMM)
o Download, install, and fire up SCVMM 2012

· Are you looking to take a Microsoft Certification exam? Exams we can talk about:

o 70-659 TS: Windows Server 2008 R, Server Virtualization (Hyper-V + VMM)

o 70-400 TS: Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007, Configuring

· Or do you just want more Technical nuggets?

We are here for you in the afternoon, and will be there to help answer the questions you really care about!

If you're familiar with lightning talks, this will be similar. If you have a specific scalability solution you have implemented and would be willing to deliver a 10 minute presentation on your solution (slides/demos are NOT necessary), I'd like to hear from you. Please email me at [email protected] with a description of your talk and I'll try to get you scheduled to speak. I look forward to hearing about your ideas!

Wow, we had no shortage of responses to yesterday's call for startup show-and-tell at the meetup! Very cool. Within hours the presenter spots were booked up for the next two Venture Fridays. This week we’ll learn about two budding KC developments, Lantern and TalentHelix.

Lantern’s Aaron Sloup (CEO) will show off the company’s new Android and iPhone app.

Lantern is a way to explore the world around you and “save big.” Through the app users can save 50% to 100% in-the-moment without buying anything upfront. From the Lantern website, merchants can control their own deals, drive business to their door exactly when they want it, save huge on commissions vs. other deal platforms, and get their money right now...

TalentHelix’s Riddhiman Das (CTO), Tam Tran (UX, IP) and Troy Norris (Marketing, Ops) will share a unique business model born in UMKC’s Institute of Entrepreneurship & Innovation. It’s made up of three service components: barter services, volunteer services, and contract work portal.

TalentHelix is a product of the realization that many people are caught up in a "career paradox.” You can't get the job you want because you don't have enough experience doing it, but you can't get the experience you need until someone hires you. As a result, there are millions of people, some incredibly well educated, who are stuck doing what their resume says they can do and not what they're truly capable of. TalentHelix is a combination of social networking and online auction solutions that connects people with the work that they love, by helping them leverage the potential they've gathered in their extended social networks...

As usual, Venture Friday happy hour doors open at 4 p.m. for food, bevs and entrepreneurial chatter. Startup show-and-tell will go on around 5-ish (as you know we like to keep things comfortably fluid). Join us in welcoming Lantern and TalentHelix to the meetup.

Node has quickly emerged as "the new hotness" with JavaScript programmers. Node is a young language and has many developers confused as to when and why to use this new technology. Our talk aims to show how Node can enable front-end developers to create lean and speedy web applications with an "event-driven" server.

We'll dissect key sections of a sample application to demonstrate some of the features of Node. The popular packages Express and Socket.io will be discussed and we'll talk about the "Node way" of delivering content from a server. The overview of the application will demonstrate the necessary pieces involved in creating a real-time web experience.

This MeetUp will be looking at “Node” in both a broad and practical sense. On December 1st, we won't be live coding, but if you can install Node (http://nodejs.org/) and NPM (http://npmjs.org/) before the MeetUp will help improve you're overall knowledge of the technology. Front End-Developers looking to take their knowledge of JavaScript to a back-end server solution will gain the most from the event.
