When?
Friday, October 26th 6pm - 9pm
Saturday, October 27th 9:30am - 4pm
What?
The Beginners Python Workshop is a 2-day free event focused on teaching the basics of programming in the Python language. Everybody is encouraged to attend, regardless of your previous experience with programming. This will be a judgement-free event, so even if you've never written a line of code in your life or if you've been a professional developer for years who just wants to learn something different we'd love to teach you.
The first night will consist of setting up Python on your laptop and walking through some online exercises. Once you can show that Python is properly installed on your laptop and you can run a few basic commands in terminal you're free to go. The next day we'll start with an Intro to Python presentation, lunch and then some practical hands-on exercises.
The only requirements to attend are a laptop and a willingness to learn.
Where?
We'll be at the UMKC campus at 5110 Rockhill Road, Kansas City, MO. The room we have booked is 302 Flarsheim Hall.
Friday evening you will probably need to park in the visitor lots and pay the meters, or on the street. Saturday there's no problem parking in the garage at 52nd & Rockhill; park on the lower level, come up the stairs out of the garage to the north, across the street, then across the quad to Flarsheim (ahead of you, to the right). It's the building with the sundial on the front of it and the steel beam sculpture in front.
Room 302 is just off the atrium to the left.
Here is a link to the campus map.
Schedule
Friday, 6pm - 9pm: set up your development environment, learn how to execute Python code from a file and interactively from a Python prompt, and learn about printing and using Python as a calculator.
Saturday, 9:30am - 10am: settle in, get your laptop set up, and review Friday's material. We will start the lecture promptly at 10.
Saturday, 10am - noon: Intro to Python lecture
Saturday, noon - 1pm: we'll provide lunch. Let us know when you RSVP if you have any dietary restrictions.
Saturday, 1pm - 3:30pm: break out into groups to practice Python through short projects on a variety of fun and practical topics.
Saturday, 3:30pm - 4pm: wrap-up, next steps, and upcoming opportunities for learning and practicing Python.
