Mozilla wants to empower KC innovators to explore and define gigabit technology's full impact by building practical, tangible projects rooted in the local community.  In partnership with the National Science Foundation, Mozilla is launching Gigabit Community Funds in Kansas City and Chattanooga to support local innovators to develop education & workforce applications on next gen networks.  The program aims to catalyze a community of practice and “living  laboratory” across Kansas City and Chattanooga through an incentivizing fund, to drive tangible innovations on gigabit networks that can ultimately create greater public benefit.  $300,000,  split evenly between two cities, will be available to local organizations in Chattanooga and Kansas City through a Request for Proposals process. Grants will support the development and  experimentation of education/workforce opportunities using emerging technologies.  

The  Gigabit Community Fund follows the Mozilla Ignite Apps Challenge  program, which supported 22 teams working on gigabit app prototypes. The Fund aims to bring discoveries out of the lab and into the field. We  want to move from gigabit prototypes to Minimum Viable Pilots and get these tools in the hands of users - teachers, educators. We  are seeking dedicated individuals, community catalysts, educators, students, developers and other curious and industrious folks who want to explore and experiment with cutting-edge tools that create new learning and job opportunities. The Gigabit Community Fund is built around three core elements:
• An incentivizing fund to support development & experimentation
• A Mozilla team to support the projects and the community in their local context
• A Hive Learning Community that is built around shared goals among members in digital learning and making and economic opportunities.

How it works:
• Two 12-week Pilot Periods in Kansas City & Chattanooga
• Summer:  Opens late March / Ends late June
• Up to 10 projects per period, in each city, will receive $5-$30K
Resources will be directed to projects with real, tangible potential to impact  the community. Brick-and-mortar, mission-driven organizations must be part of each team.
