Everyone, beginner or advanced, is welcome. Don't be scared by the "advanced topics". It's your chance to see some of the capabilities that make R so useful, and even if you won't necessarily be able to use these features right away, you will still learn about future directions that you can take as you become more proficient in R programming.
We need a couple of volunteers. Steve Simon will talk about survival analysis. We've had a few suggestions for advanced topics: text mining and data visualization. One of our members mentioned at an earlier meeting that he might talk about tweet mining, but I have not had time to follow up with him about this.
We had a suggestion that, if possible, the speakers could post their materials (especially their data sources) a week or so before the meeting so that anyone attending could take a peek and maybe even try a few simple things themselves. This is not always possible, of course, but when it can be done, it is an excellent suggestion.

The talk lasts about 45 minutes. The rest of the time we will use to network with other nerdettes.
Here is the abstract of her talk:
Fractals have uses beyond generating virtual coastlines and making colorful dorm room posters. In particular, space-filling curves such as Hilbert or Morton (Z-Order) are immensely valuable in building data structures to store and search multidimensional data. This talk will cover the practical uses of space-filling curves, how they are implemented, and how they can be used to improve traditional data structures.
Thanks to Cerner for hosting by providing the space as well as Pizza and beverages! As always, we expect all participants to follow our code of conduct.

Many of you probably know what Chocolatey is, but did you know Chocolatey is primarily the product of one of our own local developers, Rob Reynolds(@ferventcoder)?
To me, Chocolatey helps me install software on my PC quickly, especially when I have several programs I want to load on a new PC or into a new VM.
Chocolatey is a package manager for Windows. It was designed to be a decentralized framework for quickly installing applications and tools that you need. It is built on the NuGet infrastructure currently using PowerShell as its focus for delivering packages from the distros to your door, err computer.
Now, Chocolatey is asking for our help to go to the next level and insure the product can continue. Chocolatey is doing this by running a Kickstarter campaign.
I encourage you to join this Kickstarter to support this product that is a benefit to us all; and especially to do so if you already use Kickstarter and know how awesome it is.

Jim Bates, Senior Systems Engineer from MapR will talk to us about Apache Drill and it's capabilities including a demo!
Piero Ferrante from Sprint Pingsight Media+ leads the Kansas City Data Science meetup and will talk to us about how they leverage Hadoop and Hive at Pinsight Media+
Jim's talk abstract:
In today's world, you need to be able to keep up with complex, rapidly evolving data, without having to wait for traditional RDBMS data management processes before you can start exploring new data and developing new insights. You also need to be able to use familiar tools to develop those insights, including the SQL query language and the tremendous toolsets built on top of it.
Apache Drill enables analysts and data scientists to perform fast SQL queries on Big Data, drawing both on traditional DBA-managed tables, as well as data in files and NoSQL databases whose structures may be complex and rapidly evolving.
In this presentation we'll describe how Drill meets this challenge, we'll demonstrate Drill in action on a live Hadoop cluster, and we'll show how you can easily get started using Drill even on a single machine without Hadoop.
Piero's focus: 1) Overview of Hadoop' at Pinsight Media+
2)The types of data sources are and how they are ingested into Hadoop
3) The different Hive queries run and lessons learnt around when to use Hive and when not to
