Mathematical optimization, finding the minima and maxima of cost or fitness functions, is at the core of many "intelligent" algorithms. From finding the optimal prices for merchandize to determining the weights of an artificial neural network, increasingly improved minimization algorithms have propelled the field of machine learning/AI to new realms.
In this talk, Naseer Dari will broadly examine optimization and the current state of the art, before we delve deeper into a specific method, the Particle Swarm Optimization, which we will cover in some detail. Along the way, we develop an intuitive understanding of a subfield of AI that is less known, but fascinating nonetheless.
Naseer Dari is a data scientist at Pinsight Media, and a physics PhD candidate.
